Session One – What is Academic Integrity? (AS) 9th November, 1pm-2pm

This session will look at what we mean by the term ‘Academic Integrity’ and why this is such an important feature of academic life, not only in terms of its impact on the individual but also on the academic community as a whole.  The session will also look at a variety of examples of academic misconduct, including plagiarism and what can lead students to do this.  Research shows that by having an understanding of what can contribute to academic misconduct, students are in a far better position to avoid it.

Session Two – What can I do to avoid plagiarism? (AS) 16th November, 1pm-2pm

This session will focus on what students can do, to avoid the pitfalls of plagiarism and academic misconduct.  We shall look at the importance of managing time along with techniques for improving our understanding of texts.  By having a better understanding of a text, students will be in a more advantageous position to paraphrase a text rather than quote excessively and rely too closely on the wording of the original text.

Session Three – Effective Paraphrasing (PB) 23rd November, 1pm-2pm

Learn to paraphrase your sources and avoid plagiarism.
Develop your own voice as you paraphrase and summarise your readings.

Session Four – How to insert references within your work (AS) 30th November, 1pm-2pm

In this session, we shall focus on what academic citation contributes to the quality of one’s work and why it is such a vital aspect of academic life.  We shall use Harvard referencing since it is by far, the preferred style demanded by many academic disciplines.  We shall cover the use of in-text referencing, the construction of reference lists and look at how to reference books, journal articles, chapters in edited books and websites.  Students will be introduced to Cite Them Right Online as an excellent referencing guide and one that is very easy to use, giving practical examples.

After having accessed these four sessions, students will have the opportunity of completing an online quiz to test their knowledge of what they have learned over the sessions.
